Finding time to get s**t done

I used to get up really early (5 or 5:30AM). It happened because I kept finding excuses to need more time in the morning (walking the long way to work, going to the gym, etc.). After a year or so, I realized that I really hated it. Despite eating well, sleeping well, and working out, I was done by the time I got home from work. I was both physically *and* mentally exhausted.

I can get up early, function fairly well and even be polite to a limited number of people, but I’m not a morning person. I need time to wake up. I also like to take my time with things, so if I wasn’t paying attention I would find myself rushed and stressed about getting to work on time.

Worse still, because I was getting up so early, I was tired by the time I got home. Rushing through dishes, dinner, and prepping lunch for the next day was stressful, but it was the only way I could find the time to sit and relax or work on a project before bed. But, even if I had time to start something, I would end up having to leave a big mess, which would accumulate day after day. I hate mess. It stresses me out!

Then I rearranged my furniture (for the millionth time) and no longer had a table dedicated to just sewing. I now have a dining/sewing/art/etc. table, which means that I really do need to have time to clean it off at the end of the day.

I needed to make a change. I was tired, stressed, and having a very unhappy and unbalanced workweek that left me too exhausted and frustrated to care about anything by the time the weekend rolled around. I need to find time to relax at the end of the day to and work on my many quilting and stitching projects.

I took a long hard look at my day-to-day routine and realized that I need one big long stretch of time dedicated to me and to getting shit done.

So, I changed my day-to-day schedule. The evenings are gloriously long (6 hours between when I get home and when I get to bed). The mornings start just before 7AM (I start work at 8AM, so that’s quite reasonable). And, I take my breakfast to work so that I can take my jolly sweet time eating it.

Adjusting has been slow. My body still wakes up (wide awake!) around 5 or 5:30AM, despite going to bed later, but I know I’ll get used to it in a week or so. I also haven’t started using the time for projects just yet, because right now I’m just trying to enjoy the free time. I’ve been catching up on books that I’ve been meaning to flip through and sorting small piles of random things. But, I’m excited that I’ll finally have time to work on things again. I think I’ll pull out a few small projects that I can put in project bags and leave by my sofa. That way, I can get cozy, turn on a movie, and work my way through some of my many, many projects.

After several weeks of internal debate, I've decided to make a major change to my day-to-day schedule so that I have a whopping 6 hours to get shit done each night. Plus, now I don't have to wake up until 6:45AM.
